Microsoft extends their services by acquiring Multimap, a UK-based online mapping service. Multimap offers a fairly standard set of mapping features, including both street maps and an aerial view of the terrain. Other Multimap features such as highlight points of interest (ATMs, Wi-Fi locations, and public transporation).
This agreement would add more features of Microsoft’s services such as Virtual Earth, Windows Life Services, and other services. Microsoft OSG General Manager Sharon Baylay said: "The addition of Multimap enhances Microsoft’s position as a leading provider of mapping and location platform services."



Microsoft did not say how much it was paying for the online mapping company. This agreement is Microsoft’s latest in a series of purchases this year, including its $6 billion buy of Aquantive, the company’s largest-ever acquisition.

Multimap launched all the way back in 1996, and claims to be the most popular mapping site in Europe, and one of the 10 most visited sites overall in the UK with 10 million monthly uniques and 190 million page views (statistic in 2007). This is one of Microsoft strategy to expand worldwide mapping coverage and will be competed with similar services such as Google Earth and Google Maps.
